Identify Blood Rhesus in Your Family
Identify Blood Rhesus in Your Family

In the field of health, blood types of A, B, AB and O (or ABO) is a classification that has been popular and known by many people. However, there is another blood type that Mothers should know, namely blood type based on Rhesus. This blood rhesus is divided into two based on the content of antigen (carbohydrate and protein), they are positif rhesus or Rh+ (antigen) and negative rhesus or Rh- (no antigen).

Like in the blood type of ABO, this blood rhesus is influenced by a hereditary factor. For example, the Mother has Rh+ and the Father has Rh- or vice versa, then the Child can have Rh+ or Rh.

There are several things Mothers should know about this rhesus, as follows:

  • Positive rhesus is owned by almost the majority of the world’s population, whereas there are only a few people having a negative rhesus, even the so-called rare.
  • People with Rh- can only get blood transfusions from those having the same rhesus. If they get it from those with Rh+, there will be rejection leading to death. This happens because the antigen in Rh+ will be considered as a foreign object so the immune system of Rh- will destroy it. it causes blood clots that lead to death.
  • A mother with different rhesus from her child in the pregnancy period should consult with the doctor because this rhesus difference may cause a miscarriage. This difference will be influential on the first pregnancy which probably only cause a yellow baby. However, on the next pregnancy, the disruption will be much more severe.

If currently Mothers have not yet checked the rhesus type in their family, it’s better to check it in the lab immediately. Thus if something happens to the Mother’s family and it needs blood transfusion, they can find the right blood type.
